General Packing Tips for Household Items



Planning for a new move? Decided to pack your belongings on your own? Here are a few tips that will help you pack items correctly and make them ready for a successful and safe move.

Collect packing supplies well in advance . For perfect and secure packing of household items you will need supplies and accessories like wrapping sheets, bubble wraps, old newspapers, blank newsprint papers, sturdy boxes (of different sizes), dish-pack boxes, wardrobe boxes, wooden containers, labeling stickers, permanent markers, scissors, knife, rope, heavy duty packaging tapes, etc.

Have a good packing plan before you proceed. Decide which items you really want to transfer and get rid of items you do not use or do not want to have at your new place.

Before you proceed to pack your belongings keep packing supplies and moving boxes handy. Start wit items first that you do not use often. Commence on packing as soon as you find out you are moving to a new place.

Never pack inflammable items, hazardous things and perishable items. You must get rid of those or dispose them before you move to your new place.

Pack contents of one room at a time. Label box with appropriate tag with its description. You can label boxes according to rooms and the nature of the items.

Do not mix items of different rooms or different nature in the same box because it will create unnecessary mess up.

Wrap items carefully in wrapping sheets or bubble wraps or old newspapers or blank newsprint paper before you put them inside the box. For certain items such as fine glassware or fine chinaware do not use old newspapers for wrapping as ink may smudge and leave ugly mark on the fine pieces.

Place heavier items first and lighter items later in the box. If possible, pack heavier items like books in small box. Do not leave the empty space in box, if any; then fill the empty space with lightly crushed papers or other padding supplies like linens, towels, socks, etc.

Use generous amount of wrapping papers and padding supplies when it comes to pack fragile, delicate or highly breakable items such as chinaware, glassware, silver ware and other items that may easily break. Mark the box with tag – FRAGILE – Handle with Care.

Wrap pieces of furniture in blankets and secure them using strong rope. If possible disassemble or detach the legs and arms of chairs, tables and other furniture. Keep the hardware of furniture in zippered plastic bag and then into a special box.

If possible, use original packing supplies and cartons to pack home appliances, small kitchen appliances and electronics. You can consult professional packers and movers for recommended supplies, if you do not have original supplies to pack appliances and electronics.

Pack all cartons firmly and securely. Seal the box using heavy duty packaging tape and clearly label them all. Proper labeling will make unpacking easier and simpler.
