Planning for a new move? Decided
to pack your belongings on your own? Here are a few tips that will help you
pack items correctly and make them ready for a successful and safe move.
Collect packing supplies well in
advance . For perfect and secure packing of household items you will need
supplies and accessories like wrapping sheets, bubble wraps, old newspapers,
blank newsprint papers, sturdy boxes (of different sizes), dish-pack boxes,
wardrobe boxes, wooden containers, labeling stickers, permanent markers,
scissors, knife, rope, heavy duty packaging tapes, etc.
Have a good packing plan before
you proceed. Decide which items you really want to transfer and get rid of
items you do not use or do not want to have at your new place.
Before you proceed to pack your
belongings keep packing supplies and moving boxes handy. Start wit items first
that you do not use often. Commence on packing as soon as you find out you are
moving to a new place.
Never pack inflammable items,
hazardous things and perishable items. You must get rid of those or dispose
them before you move to your new place.
Pack contents of one room at a
time. Label box with appropriate tag with its description. You can label boxes
according to rooms and the nature of the items.
Do not mix items of different
rooms or different nature in the same box because it will create unnecessary
mess up.
Wrap items carefully in wrapping
sheets or bubble wraps or old newspapers or blank newsprint paper before you
put them inside the box. For certain items such as fine glassware or fine
chinaware do not use old newspapers for wrapping as ink may smudge and leave
ugly mark on the fine pieces.
Place heavier items first and
lighter items later in the box. If possible, pack heavier items like books in
small box. Do not leave the empty space in box, if any; then fill the empty
space with lightly crushed papers or other padding supplies like linens,
towels, socks, etc.
Use generous amount of wrapping
papers and padding supplies when it comes to pack fragile, delicate or highly
breakable items such as chinaware, glassware, silver ware and other items that
may easily break. Mark the box with tag – FRAGILE – Handle with Care.
Wrap pieces of furniture in
blankets and secure them using strong rope. If possible disassemble or detach
the legs and arms of chairs, tables and other furniture. Keep the hardware of
furniture in zippered plastic bag and then into a special box.
If possible, use original packing
supplies and cartons to pack home appliances, small kitchen appliances and
electronics. You can consult professional packers and movers for recommended
supplies, if you do not have original supplies to pack appliances and
electronics.
Pack all cartons firmly and
securely. Seal the box using heavy duty packaging tape and clearly label them
all. Proper labeling will make unpacking easier and simpler.
